Twenty-seven (27) SHS Students in Kwabre East are HIV positive – Heath Director discloses According to the most recent Ghana Health Service data, at least 27 Senior High School (SHS) pupils in the Kwabre East Municipality in the Ashanti Region had caught HIV/AIDS (GHS).
Mrs Elsie Kissi-Appiah, Municipal Health Director, also revealed that other Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) are on the rise, encouraging citizens to be cautious and take precautions.
‘It is with great sadness that I notify you that twenty-seven SHS students have caught HIV/AIDS as a result of unprotected sex and many sex partners.’ Teenage pregnancy is also on the rise,’ she said at a presentation in the region hosted by the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development.
Collins Ntim, Deputy Local Government Minister, decried the situation, urging parties to take a step back. ‘The government is also interested in giving free antiretroviral medications,’ the Minister explained. This follows the announcement of Dr Stephen Ayisi Addo, Programme Manager of the National STIs and HIV/AIDS Control Programme, that 23,495 persons tested positive for HIV in the first half of this year.

As of December 2021, the country’s estimated HIV-positive population was 350,000, with only 71% recognized under the control program.
It should be mentioned that approximately 245,000 people, or 99 percent, were receiving therapy as of June of this year.
